I didn’t really get the opportunity to speak my mind about the olympics, and the participation of the two Saudi women; Sarah Attar and Wojdan.
So, here it goes.
I’ll admit it, I did NOT watch any of the Olympic events, except for one! and it was while I was exercising, so I can get pumped to exercise by watching them.
I soon changed the channel to watch Family Guy, because the Olympics can be some how boring at times.
But so I don’t miss out on the historic event, to say the least. I thought of bravery, courage, open mindedness and proudness, whenever I spotted the name of these two courages ladies. I was at shock, finding out that neither one of them broke the 20 year old barrier. And the first thing to pop to my head is, “They must have Amazing, supportive parents”.
These two ladies effected an area that most Saudi elder women ignore, and what most Saudi girls crave, which is sports.
We have classes for cooking that starts at the 5th grade (not sure about that), but we lack classes for sports, or even the smallest amount of exercise.
Our school classes held so many sitting down, and less of getting up and actually working. We were thought to listen, practice on paper and go home.
And it doesn’t stop at schools, we do have gyms but not a lot of them, and the ones that actually have full options like basketball, soccer, swimming, and your regular old gym, costs at least 1500 Riyals, a MONTH! And I don’t see that very supportive for an average 17 year old girl, to get active and workout. She would rather take that money and buy something that seems cooler than her health. So again, not very encouraging.
So we have expensive gyms, we all know that. But a regular Saudi household, won’t believe in such thing called, HEALTHY. The ordinary Saudi household has one of these three common types of eating schedules.
The first and most popular is, the home style cooking. Which contains a lot of carbs and sugar.
The second one is, junk food all the way. Aka; Nutella, Macdonald’s, burger king … Etc.
The third one is what’s called by many people, the YoYo dieter. Which is going on an extreme diet, losing a huge amount of weight, with a very bad diet such as (dates and laban), and then going back to her bad habits of eating, again.
All without a small amount of exercise. Which leads to staying at home, and leads to watching the Olympics and NOT participating.
If we choose to ignore the lack of gym classes in schools, and the bad habits of eating at home, we would still have many more reasons for the poor amount of active ladies in Saudi. Such as, poor advertisement for being healthy on TV. The parenthood of (عيب). The common belief, if you’re skinny as hell then you’re as healthy as you can be.
These and many more lead to the absence of Saudi ladies in the Olympics.
I mentioned one part of the story which is, why the olympics lacked the presence of saudi women and why saudi women aren’t active. I wanna mention the other side of the Olympic story which are the people who claimed what Sara and Wojdan did was amazingly disgraceful to the Saudi public. And that Sarah attar just ran over our entire traditions, and Wojdan jodoed our traditions to the ground.
I would love to mention those people and give them a round of applause, for continuing our centuries old tradition of suppression, anger of the unknown, paradox with our dear religion, Islam. And the absence of good education in sports and health.
I envy these types of people for their ignorance. Sometimes ignorance is a bless, isn’t it?. And I wish for a soon extension of their species.
